Welcome to the 7th edition of the WH Marks Sattin Interims Newsletter. Clearly we are still in challenging times as the economy starts and stutters. However, there has been greater confidence and optimism out there than we have seen for a while. During the last quarter, we have seen an increasing number of companies planning for the future, along with announcements of big strategic change programmes and an increase in corporate M&A activity.

 

The market for Interim Managers continues to be tough but there has been a definite increase in the number of assignments and new briefs during the last quarter.

There is still a lot of competition for every assignment out there, but compared to 6-9 months ago when many roles never came to fruition, new roles are getting filled quickly. Clients are also in the lucky position of being able to pick and choose from a top quality range of individuals.

We have seen the strongest demand  in a few sectors - the pharmaceutical sector has benefited from consolidation, and as a result we have taken on a number of assignments for supply chain or systems projects.

The launch of fewer new drugs, generic competition plus the continuing uncertainty surrounding the global economic crisis have contributed to the continual slowdown in the US Pharmaceutical market (growth this year has been recorded at between 1% and 2% *).
 
As a result, the incentives are even more compelling to pay more attention and resources to emerging markets; such as India, Brazil and China. There is still immeasurable potential for growth within these and other countries, however there are still lessons to be learnt.
