Forging International Links for the benefit of Dancers
"It is not utopian to hope that the dance profession will soon be adapted to the social conditions of the twenty-first century. Let us not forget that it is a profession which plays an important role in the cultural evolution of our civilisation" Philippe Braunschweig, former President and Founder, I.O.T.P.D
Dancers' Career Development firmly believes that the international mobility of dancers should not detrimentally affect the transition process. This sentiment is echoed by The International Organisation for the Transition of Professional Dancers (I.O.T.P.D) which was founded in 1993 in Lausanne, Switzerland by the late Philippe Braunschweig. The UK was one of the first four founding transition centres (1973) along with Canada (1985) the USA (1985) and the Netherlands (1986). Along with the universality of the issue, this led to the creation of an international organisation to promote activities concerning transition for dancers around the world.
The I.O.T.P.D’s mission is to alleviate the challenges that professional dancers face worldwide when transitioning into a post-performance career. The organisation aims to heighten awareness of the career transition problem worldwide; help the non profit sector and dancers themselves improve the transition process; extend dancers’ creative lives and serve as a model programme for other workforce sectors in which talented individuals confront a short performing career. The I.O.T.P.D member countries are: Canada, France, Germany, Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland and the USA.
In the future, the I.O.T.P.D plans to reinforce the links between existing transition centres, encourage countries to set up national schemes and to create an international transition support programme. Linda Yates, Executive Director, Dancers' Career Development, has recently returned from the annual I.O.T.P.D conference in Berlin, Germany. Linda was also a guest speaker at the EuroFIA (European group of the Federation of International Actors) conference.
