Volunteer Leaders

2011 Youth leadership programme

New Youth Leader Alison Mitchell, who will also lead the Churches Conservation Trust South West Camp this summer said:

"Our first training weekend was in Manchester and brought together a group of people who, although from diverse backgrounds, were united by a common enthusiasm for community volunteering.

During the course of the two days, we were set thinking about the wide range of qualities and attributes that make a good leader. We came together as a group, working collaboratively and sharing both positive and negative aspects of our personalities to aid our leadership development. "

Meet our Camp Leader: Chloe Taylor

'I first took part in a camp for the residential part of my Gold Duke of Edinburgh in 2007. It was so much fun, our projects included cleaning bones excavated from the grounds of the Cathedral and painting the bells in the tower, which was so different to anything I'd ever done. Learning about the history of Worcester Cathedral was really interesting and it was good meeting people from so many different countries. My leaders were great, there were lots of games and activities in the evenings and the end of week fancy dress party was a real highlight! When a friend mentioned leading a camp this summer I jumped at the chance. I am hugely looking forward to running the camp at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle and attempting to make it as fun and interesting as the one I went on.'

Chloe Taylor is 23 years old and lives in Essex. She has been involved in Cathedral Camps since 2007 and will be leading her first Camp at St George's Chapel this summer.

Kingston Volunteer
ReFresh Day with Kingston University

Jon Dean is a Cathedral Camps leader and on the Youth Board. On  Wednesday 23rd February 2011, he organised a team of young volunteers from Kingston University to assist with a deep clean of All Saints Church. Over a dozen volunteers turned up, from a wide variety of backgrounds, and spent the day tidying, cleaning, polishing, and taking stuff to the charity shop. The church warden was really happy with the day, and the volunteers want to do similar events in the future.

This is Jon's experience:
"Cathedral Camps encourage young people to play a role in preserving our historic buildings, of any religious denomination, either for one day or over a week in the summer. At All Saints Church our young people found out about the fascinating history of the building, its exciting future, and the role it plays in Kingston life. Small events like this play an important part in bringing students in touch with their local communities."

Cathedral Camps has recently updated its Facebook Page.

Please join our group to recieve all the latest Cathedral Camps information and ReFresh dates. It is also a space where volunteers can share pictures and stories after their camps or reFresh days.

If you run a faith building and feel it could benefit from a day of volunteering activity email Rebecca about organising an event in your building. ReFresh and Cathedral Camps are always looking to work with new venues and new groups of young people so please get in touch if you think your group of young people or venue might benefit from a day of volunteering.
